WSER App Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 26, 2026
This privacy policy describes what data the WSER mobile app ("the app") collects, how it's used, and your choices. The app is published by the Western States Endurance Run Foundation and developed for free, with no advertising and no in-app purchases.
Short version
- The app works without any account or sign-in.
- We do not track you. We do not use cookies, analytics, advertising IDs, or third-party tracking SDKs.
- We do not collect your name, email, phone number, location, contacts, photos, or any data from your device — except as listed below.
- The only data we collect is what's strictly required for the optional push-notification feature you turn on.
What we collect
If — and only if — you opt in to push notifications, we store:
- An anonymous Expo push token. This is a random identifier issued by Apple/Google's push services so we can deliver the alerts you asked for. It is not linked to your name, email, or Apple/Google account.
- Your platform (
ios, android, or web) so we can format notifications correctly.
- The list of runner IDs you've favorited, so we know which runners' updates to push to your device. These are public race-result identifiers (UUIDs that map to public WSER results), not personal data about you.
- Your push notification preferences (announcements on/off, runner updates on/off, finishes on/off).
If you submit a photo, video, or comment for a runner page, we store the file you upload and any caption you choose to add. Submissions go through human moderation before becoming visible.
We do not collect any of the following: your name, email, phone, postal address, GPS or coarse location, IP-based geolocation, contacts, calendar, microphone, camera roll, browsing or search history, advertising IDs (IDFA/GAID), device fingerprints, behavioral analytics, or crash logs.
How we use it
- Push tokens and favorites — solely to deliver the notifications you've opted in to. You can disable any category in the app's Settings; you can revoke push permission entirely from your device's Settings app, which removes our ability to reach you.
- Submitted photos / videos / comments — to display them on the appropriate runner's page after admin moderation. They are public once approved.
